Racking up the kilometers for Angelheart Foundation!
The first major national Down Syndrome Run for Charity collected nearly 60,000 kilometers! The run was a joint effort by Team Heart, Fehérvári Futópéntek ultra runners and Futótárs.Just as with Team Heart’s February Send Winter Away run – where over 400 runners we have collected over 7 thousand km and raised 5,000,000 HUF, we issued a challenge to everyone in the country. This time apart from running people could log their km by walking, biking and swimming as well. The event – intended to draw attention to children and adults with Down Syndrome and their families. One of our major partners was Special Olympics Hungary. See Team Heart on Facebook for more photos!
The event started in Székesfehérvár with over 50 runners to raise awareness for Down Syndrome Day on Wednesday, March 21st, 2012, and ended at the Centenarium walk of 1,912 km and continued on the Rotary Running Festival in Debrecen, which drew more than 6,000 participants from 17 countries. Proceeds benefit Angelheart Down Syndrome Foundation. Anyone who wanted to virtually contribute the kilometers they ran/walked/biked that day could do so on futotars.com’s website. Every day from Wednesday to the following Sunday, March 25, the kilometers just kept adding up -- and by the end of the day on Sunday over 400 runners reached the final astonishing tally of 58,486.6 km. On behalf of the organizers, Team Heart would like to express our gratitude to everyone who participated. With this initative, we proved that Hungarians are really a caring nation and can make a huge difference!

Here are a few photos of the weekly swimming sessions we've facilitated for the Seedlings at Hotel Agro's pool facilities. You can see more on Facebook. Said Dr. Magda Dobó, the institute's director and attending physician: "As a result of the swim classes we’ve seen improvements in their circulation and muscle flexibility. In the water it’s much easier for them to move and they are capable of many motions that would otherwise not be possible for them. From the social standpoint, these experiences are important because each child is accompanied by one adult minder. This one-on-one situation makes it possible for them to have attention and interaction on a level that is not possible in the group conditions in the homes."
The same day, Trustees visited the Homes to begin strategizing for the near future. Stay tuned here for more details!
In other news: Team Heart is taking its message on the road! Andrea will be discussing her book, Heart Over Heels, at the Miskolc Library and Information Center on Tuesday, April 3 at 4 p.m. She'll be accompanied by local journalist and running ambassador Bálint Szaniszló. Come join the conversation!

5 million forints for the Seedlings! On February 26 Team Heart had the thrill of organizing an unprecedented event in Hungary -- maybe even the world! Our Send Winter Away Run mobilized more than 326 Hungarian and 24 expatriate runners and groups across Hungary and from as far away as Australia to run to raise funds for disabled children. The run was extremely unusual in how it was organized -- it had no set location or start or finish time, as long as everybody completed their run by midnight. All runners submitted their kilometer log and a photo, whether from cross-country trails or treadmills, to a webpage set up with technical help from the running organization Fútótárs.com and we tabulated the results. We promoted the run exclusively through our Facebook page and local media -- keeping our administrative and organizational costs at zero.
Thanks to Market Építő Zrt. which awarded the efforts of our runners with an extraordinarily generous sponsorship of 5 million forints (22 thousand dollars), we raised a significant amount of money for the Seedlings! Funds will go towards excursions and sports events for the kids -- keep checking this space for photos and reports of how we allocated the funds to give the kids life-changing experiences. We've created a new tradition -- together. We'd like to express our profound gratitude to our generous sponsor and to everyone who participated!
